For, in speaking <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> that deliverance, he<br />

speaks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gentiles as,<br />

"The idolatrous nations who in honor to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

chief god, <strong>the</strong> sun, began <strong>the</strong>ir day at his rising."[4]<br />

He represents <strong>the</strong>m also as setting apart Sunday<br />

in honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> same object <strong>of</strong> adoration:--<br />

"The day which <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>ns in general<br />

consecrated to <strong>the</strong> worship <strong>and</strong> honor <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir chief<br />

god, <strong>the</strong> sun, which, according to our computation,<br />

was <strong>the</strong> first day <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> week."[5]<br />

The North British Review thus defends <strong>the</strong><br />

introduction <strong>of</strong> this ancient hea<strong>the</strong>n festival into <strong>the</strong><br />

Christian church:--<br />

"That very day was <strong>the</strong> Sunday <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir hea<strong>the</strong>n<br />

neighbors <strong>and</strong> respective countrymen; <strong>and</strong><br />

patriotism gladly united with expediency in making<br />

it at once <strong>the</strong>ir Lord’s <strong>Day</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir <strong>Sabbath</strong>. . . . If<br />

<strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> church is to be ignored<br />

altoge<strong>the</strong>r by Protestants, <strong>the</strong>re is no matter;<br />
