to an alarming extent idolaters, <strong>and</strong> out breaking<br />

violators <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>. But after <strong>the</strong>ir return from<br />

Babylon <strong>the</strong>y were never guilty <strong>of</strong> idolatry to any<br />

extent, <strong>the</strong> chastisement <strong>of</strong> that captivity effecting a<br />

cure <strong>of</strong> this evil.[1] In like manner did <strong>the</strong>y change<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir conduct relative to <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>; <strong>and</strong> during<br />

this period <strong>the</strong>y loaded <strong>the</strong> Sabbatic institution with<br />

<strong>the</strong> most burdensome <strong>and</strong> rigorous ordinances. A<br />

brief survey <strong>of</strong> this period must suffice. Under <strong>the</strong><br />

reign <strong>of</strong> Antiochus Epiphanes, <strong>the</strong> king <strong>of</strong> Syria,<br />

B.C. 170, <strong>the</strong> Jews were greatly oppressed.<br />

"King Antiochus wrote to his whole kingdom,<br />

that all should be one people, <strong>and</strong> everyone should<br />

leave his laws: so all <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n agreed according<br />

to <strong>the</strong> comm<strong>and</strong>ment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> king. Yea, many also<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Israelites consented to his religion, <strong>and</strong><br />

sacrificed unto idols, <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>aned <strong>the</strong> <strong>Sabbath</strong>." (1<br />

Mac. 1:41-43)<br />

The greater part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews remained<br />

faithful to God, <strong>and</strong>, as a consequence, were<br />

obliged to flee for <strong>the</strong>ir lives. Thus <strong>the</strong> historian<br />

continues:--<br />
