brought into England. Both have a high reputation
for truthfulness. In speaking of the writers of that
century, Mosheim bears the following testimony to
the credibility of Matthew Paris:--
"Among the historians, the first place is due to
Matthew Paris, a writer of the highest merit, both
in point of knowledge and prudence."[50]
And Dr. Murdock says of him:--
"He is accounted the best historian of the
Middle Ages, learned, independent, honest, and
judicious."[51]
Matthew Paris relates the return of the abbot
Eustachius (as he spells the name) from Normandy,
and gives us a copy of the roll which he brought,
and an account of its fall from Heaven as related by
the abbot himself. He also tells us how the abbot
came by it, tracing the history of the roll from the
point when the patriarch gathered courage to take it
into his hands, till the time when our abbot was
