obdurate <strong>and</strong> their necks so supple. The Protestants<br />

were as yet too powerful <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong> to permit of<br />

direct persecution, but the way was be<strong>in</strong>g prepared<br />

<strong>in</strong> the cont<strong>in</strong>ual decrease of their numbers, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

systematic dim<strong>in</strong>ution of their <strong>in</strong>fluence; <strong>and</strong> when<br />

Sigismund III. went to his grave <strong>in</strong> 1632, the glory<br />

which had illum<strong>in</strong>ated the country dur<strong>in</strong>g the short<br />

reign of Stephen Bathory had departed, <strong>and</strong> the<br />

night was fast clos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> around <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong>.<br />
