of Denmark, a mild <strong>and</strong> pious pr<strong>in</strong>ce, received<br />

Alasco <strong>and</strong> his fellow-exiles at first with great<br />

k<strong>in</strong>dness; but soon their asylum was <strong>in</strong>vaded by<br />

Lutheran <strong>in</strong>tolerance. The theologians of the court,<br />

Westphal <strong>and</strong> Pomeranus (Bugenhagen), poisoned<br />

the k<strong>in</strong>g's m<strong>in</strong>d aga<strong>in</strong>st the exiles, <strong>and</strong> they were<br />

compelled to re-embark at an <strong>in</strong>clement season,<br />

<strong>and</strong> traverse tempestuous seas <strong>in</strong> quest of some<br />

more hospitable shore. This shameful breach of<br />

hospitality was afterwards repeated at Lubeck,<br />

Hamburg, <strong>and</strong> Rostock; it k<strong>in</strong>dled the <strong>in</strong>dignation<br />

of the Churches of Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> it drew from<br />

Calv<strong>in</strong> an eloquent letter to Alasco, <strong>in</strong> which he<br />

gave vent not only to his deep sympathy with him<br />

<strong>and</strong> his companions <strong>in</strong> suffer<strong>in</strong>g, but also to his<br />

astonishment "that the barbarity of a Christian<br />

people should exceed even the sea <strong>in</strong><br />

savageness.[14]<br />

Driven hither <strong>and</strong> thither, not by the hatred of<br />

Rome, but by the <strong>in</strong>tolerance of brethren, Gustavus<br />

Vasa, the reform<strong>in</strong>g monarch of Sweden, gave a<br />

cordial welcome to the pastor <strong>and</strong> his flock, should<br />
