third edict from Ferd<strong>in</strong><strong>and</strong>, comm<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g the arrest<br />
<strong>and</strong> imprisonment of the pastors. All except three<br />
saved themselves by a speedy flight. The greater<br />
part escaped to Moravia; but many rema<strong>in</strong>ed near<br />
the frontier, ly<strong>in</strong>g hid <strong>in</strong> woods <strong>and</strong> caves, <strong>and</strong><br />
ventur<strong>in</strong>g forth at night to visit their former flocks<br />
<strong>and</strong> to dispense the Sacrament <strong>in</strong> private houses,<br />
<strong>and</strong> so to keep the sacred flame from go<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>in</strong><br />
<strong>Bohemia</strong>.<br />
The three m<strong>in</strong>isters who failed to make their<br />
escape were John Augusta, <strong>James</strong> Bilke, <strong>and</strong><br />
George Israel, all men of note. Augusta had learned<br />
his theology at the feet of Luther. Courageous <strong>and</strong><br />
eloquent, he was the terror of the Calixt<strong>in</strong>es, whom<br />
he had often vanquished <strong>in</strong> debate, <strong>and</strong> "they<br />
rejoiced," says Comen<strong>in</strong>s, "when they learned his<br />
arrest, as the Philist<strong>in</strong>es did when Samson was<br />
delivered bound <strong>in</strong>to their h<strong>and</strong>s." He <strong>and</strong> his<br />
colleague Bilke were thrown <strong>in</strong>to a deep dungeon<br />
<strong>in</strong> the Castle of Prague, <strong>and</strong>, be<strong>in</strong>g accused of<br />
conspir<strong>in</strong>g to dispose Ferd<strong>in</strong><strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> place John,<br />
