Jesuits had worked, <strong>and</strong> the crim<strong>in</strong>al drows<strong>in</strong>ess<br />

<strong>in</strong>to which the <strong>Bohemia</strong>ns had permitted<br />

themselves to fall.[5]<br />

No method was left unattempted aga<strong>in</strong>st the<br />

Protestants. It was sought by secret <strong>in</strong>trigue to<br />

<strong>in</strong>vade their rights, <strong>and</strong> by open <strong>in</strong>jury to st<strong>in</strong>g<br />

them <strong>in</strong>to <strong>in</strong>surrection. At last, <strong>in</strong> 1618, they rushed<br />

to arms. A few of the pr<strong>in</strong>cipal barons hav<strong>in</strong>g met<br />

to consult on the steps to be taken <strong>in</strong> this crisis of<br />

their affairs, a sudden m<strong>and</strong>ate arrived forbidd<strong>in</strong>g<br />

their meet<strong>in</strong>g under pa<strong>in</strong> of death. This flagrant<br />

violation of the Royal Charter, follow<strong>in</strong>g on the<br />

destruction of several of their churches, irritated<br />

the Reformed party beyond endurance. Their anger<br />

was still more <strong>in</strong>flamed by the reflection that these<br />

bolts came not from Vienna, but from the Castle of<br />

Prague, where they had been forged by the junto<br />

whose head-quarters were at the Hardsch<strong>in</strong>.<br />

Assembl<strong>in</strong>g an armed force the Protestants crossed<br />

the Moldau, climbed the narrow street, <strong>and</strong><br />

presented themselves before the Palace of<br />

Hardsch<strong>in</strong>, that crowns the height on which New<br />
