<strong>Bohemia</strong>. Another most significant <strong>and</strong> fitt<strong>in</strong>g act<br />

signalized this happy time. The Bethlehem Chapelthe<br />

scene of the m<strong>in</strong>istry of John Huss -- the spot<br />

where that day had dawned which seemed now to<br />

have reached its noon -- was h<strong>and</strong>ed over to the<br />

Protestants as a public recognition that they were<br />

the true offspr<strong>in</strong>g of the great Reformer <strong>and</strong> martyr.<br />

<strong>Bohemia</strong> may be said to be now Protestant.<br />

"Religion flourished throughout the whole<br />

k<strong>in</strong>gdom," says Comenius, "so that there was<br />

scarcely one among a hundred who did not profess<br />

the Reformed doctr<strong>in</strong>e." The l<strong>and</strong> was glad; <strong>and</strong> the<br />

people's joy found vent <strong>in</strong> such unsophisticated<br />

couplets as the follow<strong>in</strong>g, which might be read<br />

upon the doors of the churches: --<br />

"Oped are the temples; joys <strong>Bohemia</strong>'s lion:<br />

But even <strong>in</strong> the hour of triumph there were<br />

some who felt anxiety for the future. They already<br />

saw om<strong>in</strong>ous symptoms that the tranquillity would<br />
