test the two creeds by the great question which of<br />

the twa<strong>in</strong> was able to susta<strong>in</strong> the weight of his<br />

soul's salvation; <strong>and</strong> so, with convictions feeble<br />

<strong>and</strong> ill-def<strong>in</strong>ed, his purpose touch<strong>in</strong>g the reform of<br />

the Church never ripened <strong>in</strong>to act.<br />

The second name is that of no vacillat<strong>in</strong>g man -<br />

- we have met it before -- it is that of John Alasco.<br />

John Alasco, born <strong>in</strong> the last year save one of the<br />

fifteenth century [1] was sprung of one of the most<br />

illustrious families <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong>. Dest<strong>in</strong>ed for the<br />

Church, he received the best education which the<br />

schools of his native l<strong>and</strong> could bestow, <strong>and</strong> he<br />

afterwards visited Germany, France, Italy, <strong>and</strong><br />

Belgium <strong>in</strong> order to enlarge <strong>and</strong> perfect his studies.<br />

At the University of Louva<strong>in</strong>, renowned for the<br />

purity of its orthodoxy, <strong>and</strong> whither he resorted,<br />

probably at the recommendation of his uncle, who<br />

was Primate of <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong>, he contracted a close<br />

friendship with Albert Hardenberg.[2] After a short<br />

stay at. Louva<strong>in</strong>, f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>g the air murky with<br />

scholasticism, he turned his steps <strong>in</strong> the direction of<br />

Switzerl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> arriv<strong>in</strong>g at Zurich, he made the<br />
