One day a priest named Pastoris, a native of<br />

Belgium, rose <strong>in</strong> it <strong>and</strong> avowed his disbelief of the<br />

Tr<strong>in</strong>ity, as a doctr<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>consistent with the unity of<br />

the Godhead. The members, who saw that this was<br />

to overthrow revealed religion, were mute with<br />

astonishment; <strong>and</strong> some, believ<strong>in</strong>g that what they<br />

had taken for the path of reform was the path of<br />

destruction, drew back, <strong>and</strong> took f<strong>in</strong>al refuge <strong>in</strong><br />

Romanism. Others declared themselves disciples of<br />

the priest, <strong>and</strong> thus were laid <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong> the<br />

foundations of Soc<strong>in</strong>ianism.[8]<br />

The rapid diffusion of the light is best attested<br />

by the vigorous efforts of the Romish clergy to<br />

suppress it. Numerous books appeared at this time<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong> aga<strong>in</strong>st Luther <strong>and</strong> his doctr<strong>in</strong>es. The<br />

Synod of Lenczyca, <strong>in</strong> 1527, recommended the reestablishment<br />

of the "Holy Inquisition." Other<br />

Synods drafted schemes of ecclesiastical reform,<br />

which, <strong>in</strong> <strong>Pol<strong>and</strong></strong> as <strong>in</strong> all the other countries where<br />

such projects were broached, were never realized<br />

save on paper. Others recommended the<br />

appo<strong>in</strong>tment of popular preachers to <strong>in</strong>struct the<br />

ignorant, <strong>and</strong> guide their feet past the snares which<br />
