<strong>and</strong> sorrowful troops, they held on their way across<br />

the Moravian pla<strong>in</strong>s to Hungary <strong>and</strong> Transylvania,<br />

where they found new habitations. They were<br />

happy <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g the first to be compelled to go<br />

away; greater severities awaited those whom they<br />

left beh<strong>in</strong>d.<br />

Stop the founta<strong>in</strong>s, <strong>and</strong> the streams will dry up<br />

of themselves. Act<strong>in</strong>g on this maxim, it was<br />

resolved to banish the pastors, to shut up the<br />

churches, <strong>and</strong> to burn the books of the Protestants.<br />

In pursuance of this program of persecution,<br />

the m<strong>in</strong>isters of Prague had six articles laid before<br />

them, to which their submission was dem<strong>and</strong>ed, as<br />

the condition of their rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the country. The<br />

first called on them to collect among themselves a<br />

sum of several thous<strong>and</strong> pounds, <strong>and</strong> give it as a<br />

loan to the emperor for the payment of the troops<br />

employed <strong>in</strong> suppress<strong>in</strong>g the rebellion. The<br />

rema<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g five articles amounted to an<br />
