to carve out <strong>the</strong> time <strong>and</strong> exact <strong>the</strong> necessary patience from <strong>the</strong>ir busy lives <strong>and</strong><br />

engage <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> task of essai writ<strong>in</strong>g. I relate with students at this community<br />

college ten m<strong>in</strong>utes from my husb<strong>and</strong>’s host-family, with whom we have been<br />

liv<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>in</strong>ce last Christmas. I underst<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> push-pull of return<strong>in</strong>g to school<br />

<strong>and</strong> fight<strong>in</strong>g to earn a degree with academic objectives <strong>and</strong> balance family life. I<br />

am motivated to write <strong>and</strong> enter a public conversation when <strong>the</strong> subject matters<br />

<strong>in</strong> particular ways to my life. For example, research<strong>in</strong>g vacc<strong>in</strong>ations <strong>and</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g<br />

essays on alternative medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> face of ris<strong>in</strong>g health costs <strong>and</strong> threats of<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g bodily toxicity. Answers seem fur<strong>the</strong>r away <strong>the</strong> deeper one probes <strong>and</strong><br />

attempts to underst<strong>and</strong>; however, <strong>the</strong> care deepens <strong>and</strong>, ultimately, one asserts a<br />

stance as knowledge is ga<strong>the</strong>red (both life experiences <strong>and</strong> facts).<br />

Writ<strong>in</strong>g has been a way to locate myself <strong>in</strong> time <strong>and</strong> to contextualize o<strong>the</strong>rs’<br />

lives around me by <strong>the</strong> concrete act of words on a page. Time seems fluid as I<br />

live <strong>in</strong> an old castle on a hill with extended family. My children swim <strong>in</strong> a pool<br />

where once I first met <strong>the</strong>ir fa<strong>the</strong>r. I have composed essays to underst<strong>and</strong> where<br />

I am, <strong>and</strong> why I’m here. By essai writ<strong>in</strong>g, my personal life <strong>in</strong>tersects with my<br />

academic life <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re is liberty to become self-aware, to construct mean<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

<strong>and</strong> to articulate <strong>the</strong> purposes emerg<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a present vision of life. In addition<br />

to temporality, writ<strong>in</strong>g can be a resource for <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g wellness by lessen<strong>in</strong>g<br />

isolation <strong>and</strong> seek<strong>in</strong>g underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g as one’s personal realities are made public.<br />

Fur<strong>the</strong>rmore, <strong>in</strong>dividuals writ<strong>in</strong>g essais learn to evaluate socially situated mean<strong>in</strong>gs,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>y may wish to challenge aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong>ir own embodied realities. In<br />

<strong>the</strong> process of realiz<strong>in</strong>g one’s own positions on issues, an essai writer pays critical<br />

attention to details of o<strong>the</strong>rs’ arguments. By so do<strong>in</strong>g, an essai writer becomes<br />

more conscious of herself as well as o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

For me, an essai writer analyzes aspects of life <strong>and</strong> constructs mean<strong>in</strong>gs for<br />

<strong>the</strong> benefit of self <strong>and</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs. An essai writer engages o<strong>the</strong>rs with <strong>the</strong> passion<br />

she encounters <strong>in</strong> writ<strong>in</strong>g to underst<strong>and</strong> relationships among aspects of life that<br />

might o<strong>the</strong>rwise have seemed unrelated. Accord<strong>in</strong>gly, an essai moves from closeup-<strong>and</strong>-personal,<br />

divulg<strong>in</strong>g details of one’s own life, to academic <strong>and</strong> scholarly,<br />

whereby one relates to o<strong>the</strong>rs’ ideas <strong>and</strong> extends <strong>the</strong>m. In addition, one develops<br />

notions <strong>and</strong> cont<strong>in</strong>uously connects <strong>the</strong> personal <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> social to render<br />

a cohesive <strong>and</strong> coherent essai. A composer of <strong>the</strong> essai aims to push past <strong>the</strong><br />

obvious <strong>and</strong> delve <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> deeply mean<strong>in</strong>gful, <strong>and</strong> one is ultimately surprised<br />

by underst<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>gs ga<strong>in</strong>ed through writ<strong>in</strong>g that relates personal experiences to<br />

social issues researched.<br />

Essai writ<strong>in</strong>g can be pragmatic, particularly for students of composition, because<br />

it is a non-foundational approach to writ<strong>in</strong>g that enables a critical, search<strong>in</strong>g<br />

spirit <strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>vites students to construct personally relevant mean<strong>in</strong>gs with<strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> social contexts of <strong>the</strong>ir everyday lives. Compos<strong>in</strong>g essais can be <strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e with<br />
