Expressive Pedagogies<br />

re-<strong>in</strong>scribe <strong>the</strong> simplistic attitude toward expressivism I seek to contest. However, I<br />

use <strong>the</strong>se terms because <strong>the</strong>y frame <strong>the</strong> field’s long-st<strong>and</strong><strong>in</strong>g debate about pedagogies<br />

<strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g personal writ<strong>in</strong>g (ano<strong>the</strong>r term Elbow complicates <strong>in</strong> useful ways). In analyz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> complexities <strong>in</strong>volved whenever any <strong>the</strong>ory is adapted to classroom practices,<br />

this essay can be read as a first step toward Elbow’s goal of elim<strong>in</strong>at<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> word<br />

“expressivism”—<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> assumptions that surround it—from our historical lexicon.<br />

Beauvoir’s journals; The Education of Kate Haracz: Journal of an Undergraduate,<br />

which was orig<strong>in</strong>ally pr<strong>in</strong>ted <strong>in</strong> a 1970 issue of Change magaz<strong>in</strong>e; <strong>and</strong> a chapter<br />

from Barrett M<strong>and</strong>el’s Literature <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> English Department that exam<strong>in</strong>es students’<br />

journal writ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> an Honors drama course. M<strong>and</strong>el had previously taught at<br />

Pitt <strong>and</strong> had worked alongside Bramhall on curriculum reform.<br />
