Lifts: their impact
on the environment
Ascensori:
l’impatto ambientale
Giuseppe Iotti
T
here are different ways of assessing
the impact of a certain product on the
environment, such as calculating its
carbon footprint, among others. In the case
of lifts, a system of analytical procedures has
been recommended that could result in the
manufacturer issuing an Environmental Product
Declaration. This is an understandably complex
process because it involves following the life cycle
of the product ‘from cradle to grave’. Identifying
the impact of extracting the raw materials, of
transporting them to the manufacturing facilities
(such as the steelworks), and from here to
the semi-finished production facilities,
and then in the case of lifts there
are the factories that produce
their components. After this,
they are transported to the
building sites. The installation
phase follows, and then the
operational phase, which in
our case lasts decades, and
finally the dismantling and
disposal of the various parts as
waste products. These procedures
do not include any repairs to or
replacement of the individual components
as these are rather unpredictable. By ‘impact’ we
mean both in terms of the energy they consume
and their impact on the environment. I must
admit that I have not yet seen an environmental
declaration that specifically refers to lifts, but it
is easy to imagine the many challenges one faces
when drafting a reliable one.
E
sistono strumenti diversi per valutare
l’impatto ambientale di un prodotto,
quali il calcolo dell’impronta di
carbonio e altri. In ambito ascensoristico si
è proposto un sistema di regole di analisi
che può portare il produttore all’emissione
di una dichiarazione ambientale di prodotto
(EPD, dall’inglese Environmental Product
Declaration). È un processo comprensibilmente
complesso, perché si tratta di seguire il
prodotto, come si suol dire, ‘dalla culla alla
tomba’. Si identifica l’impatto dell’estrazione
delle materie prime, del trasporto agli
impianti di trasformazione (quali
le acciaierie per il ferro), da
questi si passa alle fabbriche
dei semilavorati (nel caso
degli ascensori abbiamo le
industrie dei componenti) e
da queste ai cantieri, e c’è
la fase di installazione, poi
quella di funzionamento (che
nel nostro caso dura decenni)
e infine lo smantellamento e il
destino dei diversi componenti
come rifiuti. Nelle regole è stata
esclusa per ora l’attività di riparazione
e sostituzione dei soli componenti, in quanto
piuttosto imprevedibile. Per ‘impatto’ si intende
sia quello energetico, che quello ambientale.
Devo ammettere che non ho visto, sinora,
una specifica dichiarazione ambientale di un
ascensore, ma si intuiscono facilmente le tante
difficoltà a elaborarne una affidabile.
