WAYS FOR LIFT MANUFACTURERS TO REDUCE THEIR ENVIRONMENTAL FOOTPRINT How can the lift industry reduce its environmental footprint, both in terms of installing and maintaining the lifts? We are not referring to manufacturers of components because this would require a totally different analysis. Above all, we should pay attention to the characteristics of heating and air conditioning systems, (in particular old heating systems are responsible for the poor quality of the air we breathe in cities, even more so than traffic). We should also insist on better insulation in the buildings we work in. In offices we should carefully separate the materials we dispose of, for example printer cartridges. This is even more important in warehouses with regard to, for example, paints, solvents or lubricants. Moreover, it is important to avoid spilling hydraulic oil (including in warehouses). It is extremely important to separate components containing hazardous substances such as lead batteries. Electronic cards and any other electrical or electronic materials that need to be disposed of (i.e. cannot be reused as a spare part, or repaired, which is the better option) belong to the so-called WEEE (Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment) and must be disposed of by specialised operators. From these, in the right quantities, you can also derive precious metals such as silver, gold and platinum as well as, of course, copper. Other substances contained in these devices are hazardous. As for the rare earths found for example in permanent magnetic motors it is well known that extracting these has a huge impact on the environment, given the small quantities involved, however, to date there does not seem to be a specialised system for separating and recycling them. A key topic is how we go about handling packaging, which is made from different materials, for example wooden pallets that can potentially be reused or repaired if they are slightly damaged. Like any other material that gets dirty with sludge, such as cloths or metal parts, they should be handled like hazardous MODI PER RIDURRE L’IMPRONTA AMBIENTALE DELL’AZIENDA ASCENSORISTICA Come ridurre l’impronta ambientale dell’azienda ascensoristica, intesa come quella che si occupa di installazione e manutenzione degli impianti? Non parliamo qui delle aziende produttrici di componenti, perché ciò richiederebbe tutt’altro approfondimento. Innanzitutto si dovrebbe fare attenzione alle caratteristiche degli impianti di riscaldamento e condizionamento (in particolare quelli di riscaldamento obsoleti sono responsabili, ancora più del traffico, dell’aria cattiva che respiriamo in città). Si può anche valutare un migliore isolamento termico dell’edificio in cui si opera. In ufficio occorrerebbe differenziare bene i materiali una volta diventati rifiuti, per esempio le cartucce delle stampanti. Ciò si rende ancora più necessario in magazzino, ad esempio per quanto riguarda vernici, solventi o lubrificanti. Importante evitare, inoltre, sversamenti di olio idraulico (questo anche in cantiere). Importantissimo differenziare i componenti che contengono sostanze pericolose, quali le batterie al piombo. Le schede elettroniche e ogni altro componente elettromeccanico o elettronico che diventi rifiuto (cioè non si possa riutilizzare come ricambio, o riparare, che se possibile è la cosa migliore) fanno parte dei cosiddetti RAEE (Rifiuti di Apparecchiature Elettriche ed Elettroniche) che vanno conferiti a operatori specializzati. Da questi, nelle quantità, si possono ricavare anche metalli preziosi come l’argento, l’oro e il platino, oltre che ovviamente il rame. Altre sostanze contenute nei dispositivi invece sono pericolose. Quanto alle terre rare che si trovano, per esempio, nei motori a magneti permanenti, è risaputo che la loro estrazione è molto impattante, mentre, date le piccole quantità in gioco, per ora non sembra esistere un circuito specializzato per la loro differenziazione e recupero. Un tema centrale è quello della gestione degli imballi, che sono costituiti da materiali differenti tra loro, per esempio i pallet in legno, che sono possibilmente da rimettere in circuito, o riparare se hanno danni minori. By now we should be considering using electric vehicles, although there is the problem of the lack of quick-charging stations that must be addressed (at least in Italy) and, finally, the question of where this electricity comes from which, if it is not from a renewable source, it only shifts and does not solve the problem. • sono, vanno trattati come rifiuti pericolosi.
