In this episode of Voices from the World, our
guest is Albert T. So (in the photo below),
a university professor (University of Hong
Kong) and consultant in the vertical transport
sector for over 25 years.
Albert T. So is an Honorary Visiting
Professor at the School of Science and
Technology of the University of Northampton
(UK) in the field of lift engineering and a
scientific advisor and member of the IAEE
(International Association of Elevator
Engineers) executive committee.
We spoke with him about the sector and the role
of Elevatori Magazine in the dissemination of
knowledge about lifts.
In questa puntata di Voci dal Mondo ospitiamo
Albert T. So (nella foto qui sotto), docente
universitario (University of Hong Kong) e
consulente nel settore del trasporto verticale da
oltre 25 anni.
So è Honorary Visiting Professor presso la School
of Science and Technology dell'Università di
Northampton (UK) nel settore dell’ingegneria
degli ascensori e consulente scientifico e membro
del comitato esecutivo di IAEE (International
Association of Elevator Engineers - Associazione
internazionale degli ingegneri degli ascensori).
Con lui abbiamo parlato del settore e del ruolo che
Elevatori Magazine ha nella diffusione del sapere
ascensoristico.
When did you see Elevatori Magazine for the
first time?
I cannot remember the exact date, but I
remember the first time when I noticed the
existence of Elevatori. It was during an Elevcon
in the past. Could be something like thirty
years ago when I first attended Elevcon, in
Amsterdam.
In the elevator field, which are the most important
topics that a magazine have to deal with?
Since I am an engineer, I of course am
interested especially in technology progresses
and successful case studies in high technology.
Which news do you read in Elevatori Magazine
(technique, actuality, norms, economic report
etc.)?
On Elevatori Magazine I frequently read
articles about technical development and big
project reports.
Quando ha letto per la prima volta Elevatori
Magazine?
Non mi ricordo la data precisa, ma ho bene
in mente quando sono giunto a conoscenza
dell’esistenza di Elevatori: è stato in occasione di
un’edizione di Elevcon. Sarà stato circa trent’anni
fa: era la prima volta che andavo a Elevcon, che si
teneva in quell’anno ad Amsterdam.
Quali sono gli argomenti più importanti che deve
trattare una rivista dedicata agli ascensori?
Essendo un ingegnere, mi interessano ovviamente,
soprattutto, i progressi in campo tecnologico e i casi
di successo di implementazione di alta tecnologia.
Quali sono gli articoli che legge più di frequente
in Elevatori Magazine (tecnologia, attualità,
normativa, rapporti di mercato, ecc.)?
Su Elevatori Magazine leggo frequentemente
articoli sullo sviluppo tecnologico e relazioni su
grandi progetti.
Does it make sense to have Elevatori
Magazine printed in paper in the
digital era?
I still know people who prefer to
have something solid on their
bookshelves.
I think hardcopies still need to
survive but those who
subscribe must pay a much
higher fee.
Then, they are
discouraged to continue ordering
hardcopies, considering the big topic of
sustainability.

Ha senso, nell’era digitale, avere un
giornale su carta stampata?
Ci sono ancora tante persone che
preferiscono avere qualcosa di
fisico sul proprio tavolo. Penso
che la carta stampata abbia
ancora molto da dire, ma gli
abbonati devono pagare ben più
caro il proprio abbonamento.
E questo, detto in altre parole,
fa sì che il lettore si senta poco
motivato a scegliere questa strada, in
un’epoca in cui la sostenibilità viene
prima di tutto.
