Biotechnology is an exciting sector where breakthroughs in technology are based on biology.<br />

Numerous in-demand career opportunities exist in this field within the pharmaceutical, food, and<br />

cosmetics industries. Be prepared to become a laboratory technician after gaining practical skills<br />

in microbiology, chemistry (analytical), organic chemistry, and biochemistry — while also learning<br />

laboratory techniques and safety procedures. Additionally, you learn to isolate, enumerate, and<br />

identify microorganisms from various samples; prepare specimens for staining; aseptically handle<br />

materials; and much more. The program’s project-based approach includes independently-designed<br />

microbiology projects to enhance your problem-solving and research skills. When you graduate, use<br />

this well-rounded knowledge and skill set to go further faster.<br />

Program Accreditation and Recognition<br />

• This program has met the national educational standards of Canada’s engineering technology and applied<br />

science profession, and as such, has received national program accreditation from Technology Accreditation<br />

Canada (TAC).<br />

• The Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT) recognizes this TAC<br />

nationally-accredited program as meeting the academic standard for certification in the Certified Technician<br />

(C.Tech.) category as well as the OACETT language benchmark requirement.<br />

If you are science-minded, fascinated with technology, and enjoy problem-solving, Biotechnology<br />

turns these qualities into a career in industrial microbiology and chemistry. In addition to specialized<br />

biotechnology applications, biochemistry, microbial genetics, and clinical and environmental<br />

microbiology study, project work enhances your research skills, laboratory techniques, report writing,<br />

and presentations. Also learn to isolate, enumerate, and identify microorganisms from samples;<br />

accurately calibrate and use a range of instruments; prepare microbiological media and reagents to<br />

culture pathogenic microbes; and more. Our holistic approach ensures you are comfortable as part of<br />

a team and in leadership roles.<br />
