The evidence-based knowledge and skills you gain from the Addiction and Mental Health Worker program prepare you for the range of community health and human services environments. You learn to screen, assess, and respond to people with mental health and substance use issues from diverse cultural and community perspectives. The curriculum also covers advocating for equitable access to supports and services. Classroom instruction is combined with a field placement, during which you work with clients under the supervision of experienced service providers. Complete your training as a well-rounded professional who is ready to go further faster. Note: This program is taught using a combination of modalities. Courses may be delivered face-to-face, online, or in a blended/ hybrid combination of both online and traditional classroom teaching. Program Accreditation The Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers (OCSWSSW) has approved the Centennial College Addiction and Mental Health Worker program as an equivalent to a Social Service Work diploma. Graduates of this program are eligible to register with the OCSWSSW, a regulatory body that oversees the social work and social service work profession. To prepare you for this important role, our program examines principles, philosophies, and characteristics of relational child and youth care practice from child- and youth-centered developmental and ecological perspectives. In doing so, it covers themes such as professional boundaries, child and adolescent mental health, counselling and crisis theories, intervention, abuse, advocacy, and anti-oppression. Besides working in a specially-designed communications lab, complete three field practicums in educational, residential, and community settings. You graduate certified in SafeTALK (suicide prevention), Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST), and Positive Space training.
