Test condition: Water as a byproduct of offshore oil production is separated<br />

from the oil, injected into the well or discharged into the<br />

North Sea. These waters contain changing concentrations of<br />

benzene and other organic and inorganic pollutants.<br />

For benzene analyses, 10 ml samples were processed.<br />

Method: Air samples were sampled in canisters and analysed in<br />

accordance with USEPA Method TO–14 (US EPA 1997) by GC–MSD<br />

(no further details reported).<br />

The limit of detection was 0.2 ppbV for benzene.<br />

Result: Benzene concentrations (mg/m**3; n = 62):<br />

1.02 – 11.16; mean: 4.85, standard deviation: 2.21.<br />

Test condition: Air sampling took place at Hong Kong Polytechnical<br />

University at a point 6 m above ground anf 8 m away from a<br />

road with 170 000 vehicles per day passing by. The sampling<br />

period was from April 1999 to March 2000.<br />

Type of measurement: concentration at contaminated site<br />

Medium: air<br />

Method: Whole air samples were collected by personal whole air<br />

sampler units that use mass flow control to collect a<br />

constant flow into an evacuated sampling container.<br />

Adsorbent tube samples were collected using pumps at flow<br />

rates of 17 and 67 ml/min.<br />

Canister samples were analysed after pressurising with a<br />

neutral gas (calculating the dilution factor from the<br />

pressures before and after addition of the neutral gas) by<br />

cryofocussing and capillary–GC–MS (ion trap instrument) with<br />

a packed pre–column.<br />

Adsorbent samples were analysed by thermal desorption,<br />

focussing on a trap at 27°C and capillary–GC–MS (ion trap<br />

instrument).<br />

Benzene was quantified by both methods.<br />

Result: Overall results from canisters and tubes at Sao Paulo<br />

(number of samples / mean (ppbV) / standard error of means<br />

(ppbV):<br />

Canisters: 34 / 2.6 / 0.4. –– Tubes: 78 / 2.5 / 1.0<br />
