The concentration of benzene in the fish was measured by gas<br />

chromatography after 5 minutes incubation at 80°C of the<br />

fish tissue and air.<br />

Result: Benzene concentration in the seawater after 48 h was 69 % of<br />

the initial concentration. 6 hours after start of exposure and<br />

then daily for 7 days gallbladder, intestine, pyloric caeca,<br />

gill, brain, liver, muscle, kidney and immature male and<br />

female gonad tissues were sampled and analyzed for 14C. The<br />

following BCFs were determined: 31 (gallbladder), 7 (gills), 6<br />

(intestine, pyloric caeca, brain), 5 (liver), 4 (muscle,<br />

kidney) and 2 (gonad). After 5 days of depuration only in the<br />

gallbladder 14C was found. In all other tissues a fast<br />

depuration was observed.<br />

A second experiment was conducted to find out whether benzene<br />

or metabolites was accumulated in the gallbladder. 6 fish were<br />

exposed to 100 nl/l benzene. After 48 h the gallbladder was<br />

extracted and the extract was analyzed for benzene by GC. No<br />

detectable benzene (detection limit: 0.1 nl/g) was found. This<br />

indicated that most or all of the 14C measured in the<br />

gallbladder was not due to benzene but to one or more<br />

metabolites.<br />

preceded and followed by a continuous water flow of 2 l/min.<br />

Radiometric analysis of water samples was conducted at 0, 6,<br />

24 and 48 h.<br />
