STATISTICAL METHODS<br />

Multivariate analysis and multiple linear regression<br />

analysis were used to determined if there was any<br />

relationship between maternal allele frequency of CYP1A1,<br />

GSTT1 polymorphisms, maternal / infant characteristics and<br />

gestational age in the reference– and benzene exposed<br />

populations.<br />

Result: GENERAL<br />

This was an overall low–risk population, with the majority<br />

of women at their optimal reproductive age. Ninety–seven<br />

percent of the infants were born at term, with a mean<br />

gestational age of 39.9 wk. Women from the reference– and<br />

benzene exposed populations were similar in terms of CYP1A1<br />

HincII– and GSTT1 allele frequency.<br />

GESTATIONAL AGE STRATIFIED BY CYP1A1 AND GSTT1<br />

As estimated from multiple linear regression, benzene<br />

exposure was associated with a decrease in mean gestational<br />

age of –0.29 wk (P
