Method: 1. Tobacco seedlings potted in soil in exposition chambers<br />

were exposed to specific amounts of benzene introduced into<br />

the chamber onto a filter paper. The air was mixed by a<br />

ventilator.<br />

2. Tobacco seedlings were suspended in glass flasks with<br />

their roots covered by moist cotton encased in thin foil.<br />

After introducing the desired amount of benzene into the<br />

flask onto a bit of cotton the flask was sealed.<br />

In both cases, the volume percentage of benzene added<br />

amounted to 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 and 5.0 as well as a<br />

control (no benzene added). Each experiment was run in<br />

several replicates.<br />

3. After the preliminary experiments in the static chambers,<br />

tobacco seedlings were exposed to benzene vapours in 15 l<br />

chambers with permanent gas flow (2.5 l/h for 10 hours after<br />

initial rapid blowing in the benzene vapour). All surfaces<br />

exposed to benzene vapour were protected against benzene<br />

absorption.<br />

The plants were examined 1 – 2 hours after the end of<br />

exposure. If the leaves regained their turgidity, they were<br />

regarded as uninjured. If the leaves did nor regain their<br />

turgidity, and necrosis began to develop, the benzene<br />

concentration was regarded as toxic.<br />

Result: The experiments in the flow–through chambers gave the<br />

following results:<br />
