Test condition: Bioassays were conducted with adult and larval brine shrimp,<br />

respectively.<br />

13–25 adult shrimp (wild captures acclimated at least 10<br />

days) were exposed in 10 l seawater to benzene at different<br />

temperatures and salinities (see below). Oxygen content was<br />

at least >/= 5.8 ppm at the end of the experiment.<br />

Approx. 30 larval shrimp (capture bred) were exposed in 350<br />

ml glass bowls.<br />

Benzene concentrations were measured by UV–spectrophotometry<br />

(at 250 nm).<br />

Effects of benzene on animals were recorded by microscopical<br />

observation.<br />
