a group of other buildings contributed to the fact that the square where<br />

it was located was one of the architecturally most beautiful in Europe.<br />

Constructing the building in its externally historical form is part of<br />

a pian to renew the square as a whole.<br />

Inside, the building was completely restructured in view of the fact<br />

that in now serveš a different purpose — it is a concert halí. Yet all<br />

facilities are defined by Classicist form as an expression of the ancient<br />

idea of close links between architecture, painting, sculpture and highly<br />

developed craft skills.<br />

SEMPER OPERA IN DRESDEN<br />

The new opening of the Semper Opera in Dresden on February 13, 1985,<br />

exactly fořty years after it had been destroyed, was a historie event which<br />

was noted far beyond the borders of our country. By the faithful reconstruction<br />

of the Semper Opera, a world famous cultural institution was<br />

re-opened; the building is part of a complex of buldings on the banks of<br />

the Elbe river and the renewal of its other parts will continue in future<br />

years with the reconstruction of the castle and the Taschenberg Paláce.<br />

After the fire of 1869, when the originál court theatre built by Gottfried<br />

Semper in the years 1838 to 1841 was burnt down, and after another<br />

seven years of construction activity the new theatrical building, built<br />

acording to his project, was opened. In its time, it was one of the best.<br />

The first conservation work after the destruction of the building in 1945<br />

was carried out soon after the war's end, but the actual reconstruction<br />

was begun only in 1977. After this long period for preparations, the<br />

definitivě concept matured. On the one hand it takés into consideration<br />

the value of the building as a historical monument and on the other<br />

hand it provides all the functional requirements of a modern theatre.<br />

MUNICIPAL THEATRE OF COTTBUS<br />

The Municipal Theatre of Cottbus, built in the years 1907—1908, according<br />

to the project by architect Bernhard Sehring, is an outstanding<br />

theatrical building in the latě Modern style.<br />

In view of the damage doně to the building, the obsolete and worn out<br />

stage technology and installations, as well as the poor work conditions<br />

for the ensemble, the decision was made to underta<strong>ke</strong> an extensive<br />
