Sensitivity and uncertainty, tongue-tiedness, exaggerated suspiciousness, feeling
labelled and mistrusted, emotionalism and tics, facial expressions or jargon and the
attention that these things raise can disturb and offend. Several of the interviewed
men have tattoos that in many cases obviously did not come about as a result of
a fashion trend or a history as a sailor. To get upset or withdraw in a more or less
spectacular way can also make the problems worse. An excessively relaxed attitude
to heavy drugs, not being afraid in situations where most people would withdraw,
becoming terrified when one normally would not react at all and other remaining
marks and anomalies can also cause distancing, wonder or disgust.
Distorted or deficient displays of responsibility, tendencies to new forms of deviance,
not having a driver licence or not having served in the military as mandated
for Swedish men until recently might also raise questions. Trial costs and foreclosure
processes can drain financial and social resources many years after recovery. Prosecutors
and collection officers obviously have access to records that should have been
deleted years ago. In addition, zealous police officers may make home visits, jump to
conclusions or act in a labelling manner many years after decency has been established.
An impoverished family culture or degrading kin chronicle, convicts’ slang
or threatening glares probably do not facilitate community with common people,
either.
Despite lingering questions and concerns, this work presents a number of people
with serious troubles who have obviously, although death has sometimes come
between, succeeded quite well in their aim to become a decent citizen. The circumstances
that triggered their decisions to wind up their dependency and criminal
involvement in order to rather successfully remain sober and honest, however, imply
that reintegration models based on particular steps and programmes or institutionalised
ingredients and staff measures may need to be reconsidered and revised.
