The Norwegian lundehund is a very rare breed with a small population size of about
1500 animals worldwide. The largest population size is found in the Scandinavian
countries. In other European countries like Germany only very small populations with
less than 50 individuals exist. It is also a quite old breed, which has been bred
without much influence from other breeds since a long time. Therefore, it is not
surprising that the Norwegian lundehunds genotyped did not show a great diversity in
SNPs and microsatellites. So it is difficult to develop appropriate polymorphic
markers for this breed. Because of the small population size it also difficult to
ascertain many affected and unaffected dogs of this breed.
Nevertheless, a causative mutation located in the amnionless gene should have led
to a common haplotype in all affected animals or to a significant association for at
least one for the markers genotyped. Therefore, we could rule out the amnionless
gene as causative for the malabsorption of cobalamin in the Norwegian lundehund.
Any other defect in the cobalamin absorption pathway can not be excluded.
