FREQUENCY OF WORK PERFORMANCE<br />

The accepted standard for describing the physical and rate of work performance (frequency) is the <strong>Dictionary</strong><br />

of <strong>Occupational</strong> Titles (DOT Manual) researched and published by the United States Department of Labor<br />

(4th edition, revised 1991). The DOT Manual defines the rate of work performance, or frequency, according<br />

to the following criteria:<br />

Infrequent Occasional Frequent Constant<br />

Percent of the day 1 – 2% 3 – 33% 34 – 66% 67 – 100%<br />

Material handling<br />

Repetitions per day 1 – 4 reps 5 – 32 reps 33 – 250 reps 251 – 2,000 reps<br />

Max reps per hour 1 every 2 hours 4 reps/hour 31 reps/hour 250 reps/hour<br />

Non-material handling<br />

Repetitions per day 1 – 4 reps 5 – 100 reps 101 – 800 reps > 800 reps<br />

Max reps per hour 1 every 2 hours 12 reps/hour 100 reps/hour > 100 reps/hour<br />

Repetitive & static<br />

Repetitions per day 1 – 50 reps 51 – 250 reps 250 – 1,000 reps 1,000 – 20,000 reps<br />

Max reps per hour 6 reps/hour 31 reps/hour 125 reps/hour 2,500 reps/hour<br />

PHYSICAL DEMAND LEVEL<br />

The strength required to perform work is described as the physical demand. There are five levels that describe<br />

the physical demand for average job performance, according to the DOT Manual.<br />
