3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 103
is sent to 'the nations that despoiled you'.
The second and third occurrences are as part of the phrase 'know
that Yahweh has sent me to you' which is also found in 4.9b and
6.15b. Both are passages which amplify visions. This, therefore, is
clearly a major concern of the editor of at least Zechariah 1-6. The
change of person of the addressee from second masculine plural to
second feminine singular presents no great difficulty: in vv. 12-13 the
prophet has the people of Zion in mind; in vv. 11, 14-15 he addresses
the personified Zion.
nn. As mentioned above, this word occurs alone in vv. 5 and 7. In
vv. 13-14 we find 'En *D plus a participle, announcing what Yahweh is
about to do. These two pairs of verses do not seem to be closely
related, but in the latter case the repetition serves to connect the two
verses. This makes it more likely that the author/editor who compiled
this section did not intend a break after v. 13. This, in turn, makes it
more likely that we really have an intended chiasmus in vv. 13-15.
n'n is found in two forms: n'ntt (v. 9) and vm (vv. 13, 15). In
v. 13 it seems not to be significant, but a similar construction occurs
in v. 15, which perhaps implies a special emphasis on the contrast
between the nations' becoming spoil for their enemies and becoming a
people for God.
•pirn 'n»0i 14.##7, 8,15.##11,12. This phrase forms a frame for
another important motif in Zechariah, Di/? 'b vm (cf. 8.8b; 13.9b),
and is found in slightly different form (D^ehT Tim 133BJ1/TUDBJ1) in
8.3, 8. The rest of the verse adds the thought that not only Israel but
many nations will be joined to her. This is found at the end of both
ch. 8 and ch. 14.
Let us look first at what seems on the surface to be the clearest part
of the section: vv. 13-15. They may be set out as follows:
a For behold I. ..
A and you shall know that Yahweh of hosts has sent me
a+ Sing. . .for behold I. ..
B and I will dwell in your midst
C and many nations shall join themselves to Yahweh
on that day, and they shall be to me a people
B and I will dwell in your midst
A and you .. . know that Yahweh of hosts has sent me to you
We notice that A and B are introduced as part of a fuller statement,
but are repeated 'neat' at the end (a gather-line?) The fact that we can
