4. Connections Between Sections ofZechariah 1-14 249
addition, mtfK occurs as the first word of 5.1 and 6.1. These five
visions are, therefore, in some sense linked together already, with V7
slightly out of line. In V2 and V8 the introductory formula is followed
immediately by 'four', which strengthens the link between them. The
angel in view in this chapter is '3 "imn "|H^Qn throughout. See the
discussion in chapter 3 above. 1
The question arises whether the use of K(03 and D^'a together makes
both words less effective as markers, or whether they become important
by repetition, and thereby noteworthy when used in a different way. It
seems to me that the use of the plural in the expression 'lift up.. .eyes'
does not detract from the distinctiveness of the singular as used in
Zechariah, or even the 'seven eyes' of the stone placed before Joshua.
In discussing the second vision we noted a possible play on words in the
different uses of R(D3, but were unable to establish this suggestion. 2
The Second Vision
This seems to have no other significant verbal parallels with other
major sections of Zechariah, except that Kfo] is in two distinctive
phrases in 2.4 ('no one raised his head' and 'lifted up the horns') and
also in 5.7, 9 ('lifted the cover of the ephah' and 'lifted up the ephah').
This is striking but it may be only a coincidence. There is no essential
correspondence between the ideas expressed, but simply a verbal
resonance. See Chapter 3 above and the previous note.
]'D is worthy of special consideration in certain references and the
distinctive uses here are in 2.13 ('apple of his eye'), 3.9, 4.10 ('seven
facets'? and 'seven. ..eyes of Yahweh') and the obscure 5.6 ('their
appearance'?).
1. There is a second angel introduced, of course.
2. The Meyers' (Haggai, Zechariah, p. liii) present a table of correspondences
between Zech. 1.17-6.15 and Zech. 7-8, which contains certain entries not
represented in my table: Jerusalem inhabited, 2.8, 7.7; Jerusalem protected/secured,
2.9, 7.7 (the expressions used are quite different); (divine anger/wrath should read
1.15; 7.12, which we have noted); holy mountain, 2.17 (itzhp pan); 8.3 (ehpn in);
nations will go to Jerusalem, 2.15 (D'm D'U n 1 ?]); 8.22 (D'm D'M 1K31); Yehud as
holy land, 2.16; 8.22-23 (tfnp not used in the latter). Some of these seem legitimate,
but the hand is overplayed. In any case, they are not compelling enough for us to
take special note, since we are concentrating on links which are demonstrably
intended by the author/editor. I accept that there may be many other links in mind
which cannot, at present, be shown to be probable.
