3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 227
13 Enemies'disarray 13 disarray and division
14 Booty 14-15 A' Judah/war/spoil/nations
15 Plague against
animals
Lamarche calls vv. 1-6 a 'series of misfortunes' and vv. 7b-15 a
'series of victories'. 1 It is doubtful whether the division of the
mountains should be described in this way. It seems rather to be a
terrifying sign of Yahweh's intervention. We must question the use of
the common formula '(and it will be) on that day'. The use of this
formula to add two separate sections could easily be mistaken for a
deliberate structuring of the final passage. The latter could, of course,
be true but it needs to be established by independent criteria. Notice
needs to be taken of two further facts.
1. 'On that day' does not occur at the beginning of the subsections,
vv. 3-5, 7b-8 or 12-15; Lamarche's plan obscures
this.
2. In such cases the formula is unlikely to be used for editorial
additions, and perhaps more likely to be used in structuring
the chapter.
Lacocque comments that 'Lamarche gives a table of the structure of
14.1-[1]5 which shows he has not understood the text in question'. 2 He
does little, however, to justify his own plan. Lamarche's plan for the
remainder of the chapter is as follows: 3
16-19 a Under pain of judgment the remnant of the nations go to
Jerusalem to worship: the King Yahweh Sebaoth (2x)
20-21 a' Everything is sacred
On that day
on horses' bells. . .holy to Yahweh
on pots in Jerusalem. . . holy to Yahweh
on that day
1. He does not justify this description: he states it and refers to the plan
(Zacharie 9-14, p. 98).
2. Amsler et al.,Agee, Zecharie, Malachi, p. 132 n. 2 (where there is a
misprint: '14.1-5' should be '14.1-15'. The heading to his own plan reads '14.1-
14', but, since he treats vv. 1-15 together in the body of commentary (see esp.
p. 205), I assume that this is also a mistake.
