3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 219
Then v. 5 forms a transition to the second section by linking the
tribes of Judah with Jerusalem. This way of looking at the passage
agrees better with the way the formulae are employed. Verse 7
reintroduces Jerusalem, mentioning the 'house of David' for the first
time. Again a distinctive word, rrmsn, is used twice. Judah and
Jerusalem are now reconciled. Verse 8 ends the section in the same
way that v. 5 did: it mentions the 'inhabitants of Jerusalem' and refers
to their strength (although in a different way). The only other word
that stands out is *?u, vv. 7, 11. These instances do not seem to be
connected.
Lamarche's Treatment of Zechariah 12.1-13.6
Lamarche's results suffer from two opposite deficiencies, which have
been noted previously:
1. They do not recognize some of the correspondences noted
above.
2. They treat as significant, words and phrases which are
insignificant, and which often also occur in places not
mentioned by him.
His plan of Zech. 12.1-9 (p. 78) is as follows:
Neukirchener Verlag, 1968], pp. 15 [-20]): 2a + 3a + 4a; then 5 + 6b + 8; then 3b +
4bp + 6cc + 7. Willi-Plein conducts an unusual investigation using the categories
'Aufnahme' and Trennung' following Richter (Prophetie am Ende, pp. 40-42). She
notes the following marks of separation (2b = asyndeton; 3b = change of person; 3b
= change in type of sentence; 5b = personal pronoun without reference to the
preceding; lOb = introductory or concluding changes in the preceding sentence) and
continuity (2a = connecting or backward looking conjunction):
12.1 2b 3b 4b lOb
12.4 2b 3b lOb
12.6 2b 3b lOb
12.7 3b 2a
12.9 3b lOb 2a
etc.
These are relative terms, and the sense of the actual text is of first importance.
Nevertheless, this seems to confirm the subsidiary break at v. 6, and to direct our
attention more strongly to v. 4.
