We retain mo (2, 6), atf» (3, 24), -itftf (3, 5), but may ignore ir
(3, 6) and la (3, 26).
TU> (2, 16) seems to be more significant; the association with Din in
v. 11 and »3W3 in v. 21 may confirm this.
n»t does not seem to be significant but its associates may be: n«n
naann rrnn (v. 12), nan nsao (v. 15), and onso n«on rrnn n«r
(v. 19). These occur at the beginning of vv. 12 and 19, and at the end
of v. 15.
*pj is probably one of the most significant words. The verb occurs
with the noun naao in vv. 12, 18: ^D n« mrr "jr ~itf« naanii rrnn nun
"ictfK D'la/b'QJJn; the noun also occurs twice in v. 15. There are no
other instances of this root in Zechariah.
KDS occurs as a verb in v. 12, but only otherwise in the name
'Yahweh of hosts'. We shall retain it,
ppn occurs only in v. 12 (three times). We retain it only in view of
its rarity: it is found nowhere else in Zechariah and only seven more
times in the Hebrew Bible.
33"i occurs only in vv. 13 and 14 in different forms and may be
disregarded.
T is not promising since it occurs three times, all in v. 13. However,
we shall keep it, noting that several times in this chapter a word
occurs three times in a single verse: Ttf v. 3, 'xn v. 4, "iptf v. 10, ppn
v. 12, T v. 13.
•MUS (2, 11) reminds us of Zech. 11.6, cf. 8.10 and 7.10; nbi) (6, 6)
occurs in a cluster of verses (13-19); DID (2, 14) has been an important
word in Zechariah. We shall retain these three words.
njtf occurs in the expression 'from year to year' and hardly qualifies
for the category of words occurring twice or more.
nntf (2, 2), aan (6, 6) and nso (3, 3) must be retained.
The last five words must also be retained: nnstfa (2, 11; otherwise
only in Zech. 12), onso (2, 4; otherwise 10.10-11), n«on (2, 3;
otherwise 13.1), TO (2, 2) and nur (2, 3; nnrn occurs in 9.15 and
14.21; DVDT occurs in 14.21).
There is general agreement that this chapter may be divided into
vv. 1-15 and 16-21. Further subdivisions are sometimes made after
v. 5 1 and/or v. 19. There are obvious similarities between this and
