286 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
Zech. 11.4-13.9 begins and ends with the questions of leaders,
described as shepherds. There are some paradoxical elements, in 11.4-
14 as well as in 11.15-17 and 13.7-9. It is difficult to see how the good
and bad features of Yahweh's shepherd can fit together. In the middle
of this there is a passage dealing with a siege of Jerusalem by the
nations, ending in victory for Judah, David and Jerusalem. This leads
unexpectedly into a passage about a figure who has been pierced,
possibly representing Yahweh, 1 and then mourning over him, cleansing
from sin and uncleanness, and the removal of false prophets.
It is as if the first unit has been turned inside out. The inner sections
of 9.1-11.3, dealing with leadership, correspond to the outer sections
in 11.4-13.9. The outer sections of 9.1-11.3, dealing with war and
victory for Israel, correspond to the inner section of 11.4-13.9,
namely 12.1-13.6.
Contacts between 9.1-11.3 and ch. 14 are found only in the early
