3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 231
In each of these schemes certain words are chosen as significant and
others are ignored. Let us now, therefore, try to set out the whole of
vv. 1-15. In doing so we shall provide a rather over-literal translation,
bearing in mind also that several parts of the chapter are
obscure, and probably corrupt.
1 Behold a day is coming for Yahweh
and spoil will be divided out in your midst
2 And I will gather all nations to Jerusalem for battle
and city captured, houses plundered, women ravished
HALF city go forth into exile,
and rest of the people not cut off from city
3 Yahweh go forth and fight against those nations
as he fights on a battle day
4 And his feet will stand, on that day, on Mount of Olives
which is before Jerusalem on the east
and the Mount of Olives will be split in HALF
eastwards and westwards, a very great valley
there will not be light, precious things and congelation
7 And there will be one day
it is known to Yahweh
no day and no night
and it will be evening time
there will be light
8 And it will be on that day
living waters will go forth from Jerusalem
HALF of them to the eastern sea, and
HALF of them to the western sea
in summer and autumn it will be
1. This is the most difficult verse to translate in ch. 14. Despite this there are
few probable emendations which are supported by external sources and agreed by the
majority of scholars. The addition of the conjunction in 5.#22 is an exception, but
makes little difference for our purposes. See Saeb0, 'Die deuterosacharjanische
Frage', pp. 110-15.
