<strong>The</strong> participles (which they all are) form genuine inclusios and (again)<br />

divide up the section logically. Verses 1-3 describe the scene and<br />

Yahweh's intention; vv. 4-7 describe the symbolic vindication of<br />

Joshua (and therefore Jerusalem).<br />

Verses 1-3 have the root ]Bfo once and the noun three times; also the<br />

verb "UN twice. <strong>The</strong>se repetitions seem to be for emphasis and not to<br />

indicate structure. Two words eto 1 ? and ID occur in vv. 1-3 and 4-8<br />

(both words once each in vv. 3, 4, 5). This does not interfere with the<br />

division but links the two parts together. Within vv. 4-8 we find the<br />

following pattern:<br />

4ap Take off the garments (D'tn), the filthy ones, from upon him<br />

4ba And he said to him<br />

See I have taken away from upon you your sin<br />

4bp and clothe (efa'Tn) 1 you with rich apparel<br />

5aa And I said 2<br />

5ap Let them set a turban, a clean one, upon his head<br />

5bal and they set the turban, the clean one, upon his head<br />

1. Is this an imperative or an infinitive? <strong>The</strong> Septuagint reading tcou evSuoaxe<br />

auxov represents in« itf'a'pn which would be more natural if we assume that 4bp<br />

follows directly from 4ap, or if we put 4ba in parenthesis. <strong>The</strong> imperative with -[DR<br />

does not make good sense.<br />

2. This is usually emended to 'And he said' followed by an imperative. This is<br />

supported by Vulg. and perhaps Syr. and Targ. <strong>The</strong> LXX has KCU eTU0r)icav which<br />

is evidently to be understood as an imperative in view of the erceGriKav following.
