94 Structure and the Book ofZechariah
1. The two oracles belong together. Verses 2-6a speak of
the anger of Yahweh against the fathers, and demand a
response of the present generation.
2. Verse 6b reports the repentance called for and this prepares
the way for the message given in the second vision.
3. Verse 15 brings what was begun in v. 2 to a close by means
of a strong inclusio, and vv. 16-17 expand and elaborate on
the message of comfort given in vv. 14-15, picking up
significant words from vv. 12-13 where an urgent question
is asked, but only a general answer is given.
It would be possible to argue for a redactor's hand somewhere here.
The most likely verses to come from such a person would be vv. 2
and/or 16-17. Whoever it was who finished our chapter, he seems to
have improved on the original version. The whole is very neatly
bound together, and we may expect to see signs of artistic structuring
as we proceed to the succeeding chapters.
Zechariah 2
Figure 3 gives all repeated words for Zechariah 2. It is convenient to
include vv. 1-4, 5-9 and 10-17 in a single table since the units are
short, and since we decided above to investigate vv. 5-9 and 10-17
both separately and together.
Zechariah 2.1-4
This unit is clearly defined by the introductory formula (the first five
words of v. 1 and v. 5 are identical) and by the content. The distinctive
repeated words are, in my judgment, nos. 1-2 (?), 3-4, 7-10,
which we may label as follows:
a. Rto (?) l.#l and 4.##17,27. Otherwise it occurs only in 2.5;
5.1, 5, 7, 9 (2x); 6.1, 13.
b. ntn(?) I.#4and3.#l.
c. [n]W)N l.#6 and 3.#3. This indicates the correspondence
between the two halves of the unit.
d. pp l.#7, 2.#11, 4.##9,25,28. This is the main subject of the
unit.
