3. The Structure of Individual Sections of Zechariah 207
11.17 Woe to the/my worthless shepherd 1
who forsakes the sheep
a sword against his arm
and against his rihteye
may his arm be utterly withered
may his
TID represents two different roots: ~nj> (piel), to make blind, used of
13.7 sword awake against
my shepherd and against. ..
(oracle of Yahweh of hosts)
smite the shepherd. .. sheep scattered
(my hand) against 2 little ones
13.8 In whole land two thirds cut off. .. one third left
13.9 I will bring the one third. . . fire. ..
refined like silver. .. tried as gold
He will call on my name and
I will answer them
I will say. . .my people
and he will say Yahweh my God
We may now compare this result, which is unspectacular, with what
other commentators have concluded. We can see immediately the
appeal of excising 11.12-13 as a later addition. These verses have no
apparent connection with the rest of the section, and they divide up the
two staffs, vv. 10, 14, which are introduced together. I hesitate to do
this because they are already separated by '... it was annulled ... picn
"}i> p' (v. 11). If vv. 11-13 are excluded 3 an important part of the
narrative (whatever it means) is lost, and we must assume that the
editor who added vv. 11-13 was concerned to make an integral link
between his addition and v. 7.
1. GKC 901 regards this as a construct state form (also '3U?) rather than a noun
with first person singular suffix. The form seems to have been chosen deliberately in
any case.
2. I do not think that it is possible to take this to mean 'extend my hand over (to
protect)', (Lamarche, Zacharie 9-14, pp. 91-92), because: (a) It is too sudden and
too soon a change to salvation from judgment, in the context of this unit, (b) "w is
used twice in the preceding half verse to signify hostile action, (c) The instances of
*?K V. .. (hiphil) aitf that I can find express stern rather than comforting action,
even if the final goal is restored harmony. Cf. also Amos 1.8; Ps. 81.15.
