the people is restored. <strong>The</strong> words of v. 9b are similar to those used in<br />

expressing the covenant goal throughout the Bible (Gen. 17.8b; Exod.<br />

6.7; Hos. 1.9-2.1; Jer. 31.33 etc.). We have already seen an emphasis<br />

on this in the first part of Zechariah (2.15; 8.8b).<br />

We need to ask whether the editor has a specific purpose in separating<br />

13.7-9 from the previous 'shepherd' passages. It would not be surprising<br />

to find this. We shall investigate this in Chapter 4.<br />

Zechariah 12.1-13.6<br />

Figure 14 gives the table of repeating words, from which the following<br />

have been omitted: »DJK, Da, rrn, "JIB, |i)ab. This section must be<br />

considered as a whole, for:<br />

1. To subdivide it would produce rather brief passages, particularly<br />

13.2-6, which has very few repeated words that do not<br />

also occur in 12.1-13.1.<br />

2. Commentaries disagree on the subdivision (e.g. 12.1-14 or<br />

12.1-13.1).<br />

3. <strong>The</strong> phrase 'and on that day' (12.3-4, 6, 8-9, 11; 13.1-2, 4)<br />

occurs throughout the whole section.<br />

<strong>The</strong> words in the table seem to be potentially significant, either<br />

because of their distinctiveness, or because of their position or use in<br />

distinctive phrases. We shall discuss individual words only as we consider<br />

the structure and thought of the section.<br />

<strong>The</strong> structure of the whole is as follows. CF signifies 'Continuation<br />

Formula'. It is convenient to give Lamarche's structure, 1 at the<br />

same time.<br />

1. Zacharie 9-14, pp. 78-79, 86-87, 89-90. Lacocque has a different scheme<br />

(pp. 181-82). Here is a comparison of the two:<br />
