Chapter 13 The Interdisciplinary Treatment Team 261 read along. Next, the team leader/facilitator instructs the participants that they will be attempting to solve the problem stated in the script. Through role-playing, the participants suggest solutions to the presenting disasterrelated crisis. The participants are instructed at the beginning that by the end of the role-playing exercise they must agree on a solution to the presenting problem . While the Disaster Prep Scenario participants—the interdisciplinary team members—are role-playing, the team leader/facilitator listens to the interactions of the participants and encourages those who are reticent to become involved. The facilitator may also become involved in the Disaster Prep Scenario by talking in the voice of the character a participant is roleplaying. For example, the facilitator uses language such as “I said” instead of “he said” or “she said . ” After approximately 5 to10 minutes have elapsed and the participants have become familiar with their characters, the facilitator asks one of the participant team members to pick a contingency card at random. The team member reads the contingency card aloud to the group. Each member considers the contingency within the context of his or her character. The participants use the contingency in their discussion and pay attention to how the contents of the contingency card change the problem-solving approach of the group. Contingency cards are introduced approximately every 5 minutes until all the contingency cards are used or until it is determined the Disaster Prep Scenario has ended . Sample Disaster Prep Scenarios Script: The Darlings and the Earthquake Charley (age 89) and Doris (age 72) Darling live on the top floor of a sixstory apartment building in west Los Angeles with their two dogs, Binky and Minky. Married for 20 years, they spent much of their time traveling for fun and visiting Charley’s children and grandchildren in New York, Ohio, Portland, and San Diego. Previously they were active participants in their book club, bridge group, gym, and temple. Charley, a retired manufacturer, can no longer drive at night, has trouble walking, has difficulty remembering simple directions, and tends to become angry and belligerent easily. He also is drinking more when he is alone. Doris, depressed at the loss of their happy times and her own macular degeneration, has been thinking of discussing their future with the family but has not yet done so. She has confided some of her fears to her best friends and neighbors, Mac

The current time is 5 am and there has just been a 7.8 earthquake centered about 4.5 miles away. The catwalk to the Darling apartment has collapsed. Power is out. Elevators are not working. Fires have started across the street. There has been severe damage to the building, and the tenants must be evacuated and relocated. What to do? Cast of Characters for “The Darlings” Disaster Prep Scenario Charley Darling, 89 years old; Doris Darling, 72 years old, his wife; their children: Dan Darling, 52 years old, residing in San Diego; *Mickey Darling, 48 years old, residing in New York City; *Tom Darling, 45 years old, residing in Portland, Oregon; and *Marilyn Darling, 43 years old, residing in Ohio; and Marcella Bella, MSW, 25 years old, social worker; Terry Berry, RN, 35 years old, nurse; Fred Bledd, 30 years old, fireman; *John Good, 28 years old, fireman; Simon Pure, 65 years old, temple volunteer; *Rabbi Josh Moss, 27 years old; *Mack Back, 77 years old, neighbor; *Sue Back, 69 years old, neighbor. (Asterisks indicate optional players.) Character Role-Play Cards The following 14 character role-play cards are to be selected by the participants at random. Participants are given approximately 5 minutes to read their character’s role-play card silently to themselves and to briefly prepare to introduce themselves to the other participants. All participants introduce themselves in character to the other participants. Subsequently, the facilitator distributes the script to all participants and reads the script as the participants follow along. Character Role-Play Card #1 Charley B. Darling: age 89, has been married to Doris for 20 years and has 4 children and 10 grandchildren from a previous marriage. He is a retired golf ball manufacturer.
