Appendix II Glossary of Terms Commonly Used in <strong>Geriatric</strong> <strong>Mental</strong> <strong>Health</strong> 391<br />

Bipolar Disorder. A major mood disorder characterized by episodes of<br />

major depression <strong>and</strong> mania or hypomania, formerly called manicdepressive<br />

psychosis, circular type. The diagnosis of bipolar I disorder<br />

requires one or more episodes of mania. The diagnosis of bipolar II<br />

disorder requires one or more episodes of hypomania <strong>and</strong> is excluded<br />

by the history or presence of a manic episode. Current episode may<br />

be manic, depressed, hypomanic, or mixed manic.<br />

*Case Defi nition. St<strong>and</strong>ardized criteria for deciding whether a person<br />

has a particular disease or health-related condition; often used in investigations<br />

<strong>and</strong> for comparing potential cases; case defi nitions help<br />

decide which disaster-specifi c conditions should be monitored with<br />

emergency information surveillance systems.<br />

*Case Management. The collaborative process that assesses, plans, implements,<br />

coordinates, monitors, <strong>and</strong> evaluates the options <strong>and</strong> services<br />

required to meet an individual’s health needs.<br />

*Casualty. Any person suffering physical <strong>and</strong> /or psychological damage<br />

that leads to death, injury, or material loss.<br />

Clinical Management. Education of <strong>and</strong> discussion with patients <strong>and</strong>,<br />

when appropriate, their families about the nature of depression, its<br />

course, <strong>and</strong> the relative costs <strong>and</strong> benefi ts of treatment options. It<br />

also includes assessment <strong>and</strong> management of the patient while in<br />

treatment along with resolution of obstacles to treatment adherence,<br />

monitoring <strong>and</strong> management of treatment side effects, <strong>and</strong> assessment<br />

of outcome.<br />

Cognition. The conscious faculty or process of knowing, including<br />

all aspects of awareness, perception, reasoning, thinking, <strong>and</strong> remembering.<br />

Cognitive Functions. <strong>Mental</strong> processes, including memory, language<br />

skills, attention, <strong>and</strong> judgment.<br />

Cognitive Therapy. A treatment method that focuses on revising a person’s<br />

maladaptive processes of thinking, perceptions, attitudes, <strong>and</strong><br />

beliefs. Cognitive therapy has been developed for different disorders,<br />

including depression.<br />

*Community Profi le. The characteristics of the local environment that<br />

are prone to a chemical or nuclear accident [these characteristics
