A Successful <strong>and</strong><br />

Productive Network<br />

The <strong>Geriatric</strong> <strong>Emergency</strong> <strong>Preparedness</strong> <strong>and</strong> Response (GEPR) Collaborative<br />

is an exemplary example of successful national networking for sharing<br />

<strong>and</strong> disseminating information, leveraging resources, <strong>and</strong> influencing<br />

policy. Networking is particularly important in the fields of gerontology<br />

<strong>and</strong> geriatrics where there is often competition for resources due to its interdisciplinary<br />

nature, a fragmented delivery system, <strong>and</strong> funding deficits<br />

(Johnson, 2006). The GEPR Collaborative has achieved the goals laid out in<br />

its 2002 mission statement <strong>and</strong> strategy plan—to develop <strong>and</strong> disseminate<br />

curricular material <strong>and</strong> influence policy—as described in this chapter.<br />

GERIATRIC EDUCATION CENTERS (GECs)<br />

The <strong>Geriatric</strong> Education Centers (GECs) are the only federally funded<br />

programs specifically geared to the education <strong>and</strong> training of health care<br />

professionals in the diagnosis, treatment, <strong>and</strong> prevention of disease <strong>and</strong><br />

other health concerns of older adults. Initiated in 1985, there are currently<br />

48 GECs that provide training through continuing education; curriculum<br />

development <strong>and</strong> dissemination; training <strong>and</strong> retraining of faculty; <strong>and</strong><br />

clinical training in geriatrics in nursing homes, chronic <strong>and</strong> acute disease<br />
