Doris Z. Darling: age 72, married to Charley for 20 years, was previously<br />

married for 30 years <strong>and</strong> widow of Chip Zipp, no children, retired<br />

administrative assistant. Doris loves being busy, social activities, tennis,<br />

bridge, <strong>and</strong> travel. Recently diagnosed with macular degeneration. Concerns:<br />

“I worry about Charley’s fits of rage <strong>and</strong> his drinking, which has<br />

started to get out of h<strong>and</strong>. I am worried about my sight.” For my eyes only<br />

(not to be shared with the group): “I don’t want to go through taking care<br />

of a dying husb<strong>and</strong> again. I don’t have the strength. Where are his kids<br />

when we need them? I’m not leaving without the dogs.”<br />

Character Role-Play Card #3<br />

Dan D. Darling: age 52, Charley’s son, is a computer programmer, married<br />

<strong>and</strong> lives with wife, Della, <strong>and</strong> her widowed mother in San Diego.<br />

Dan has two children, Donald (30 years of age) <strong>and</strong> Diane (29 years of<br />

age), who live <strong>and</strong> work in New York City. Diane is married with three<br />

children. Dan is active in sports <strong>and</strong> is a ham radio operator. Della is an<br />

elementary school teacher. Dan was never close to his dad when a young<br />

adult <strong>and</strong> is even less so after Charley married Doris. Concerns: “I wish<br />

my brothers <strong>and</strong> sister lived closer so that I wouldn’t have to do this alone.<br />

I think dad is fading. I can’t take them in. I have enough on my plate.” For<br />

my eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “My rotten sister should<br />

be doing this, not me. She always gets the praise <strong>and</strong> the money but never<br />

takes the responsibility. And my brothers are no better. They’re holier than<br />

thou but no better than my sister.”<br />

Character Role-Play Card #4<br />

Mickey Darling: age 48, Charley’s son, is an unmarried aspiring actor <strong>and</strong><br />

part-time waiter. He has been a movie grip, video salesman, house painter,<br />

<strong>and</strong> mover. He lives in Brooklyn, New York, in a rental apartment. He is<br />

not particularly close to his siblings since he has borrowed money from<br />

them often <strong>and</strong> has had trouble repaying his debts. Concerns: “I hope that
