ing, she was an aide in a nursing home and worked with developmentally
disabled adults. She lives with two roommates in a shared house. Concerns:
“I hope we can get this couple to relocate to an assisted-living community.
They need a more supportive living environment. Where are the
children?” For my eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “We have
to set up a system and network for these people and fast. I hope there are
no gas leaks.”
Character Role-Play Card #8
Terry Berry: nurse, age 35. Terry has over 10 years experience in nursing,
most of which has been in the ICU. She lives with her husband and
four children in Santa Monica, not far from the Darlings’s building. She
is a serious, efficient, and happy person. She sings in her church choir.
Concerns: “Oh, I hope we can get all these folks out of here before dark. It
will be murder at night. Many of these folks need their meds. What can we
do?” For my eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “We really need
more help here. We’re going to lose a lot of them. I’d better start praying.
I hope there are no more aftershocks.”
Character Role-Play Card #9
Simon Pure: volunteer, age 65. Simon is a partially retired math teacher
and has been a temple volunteer for 2 years since his wife, Sadie, died. He
has three children who live nearby. He needs to be doing something because,
as he says, “time hangs heavy.” Concerns: “I hope everybody is okay.
I don’t know exactly what to do.” For my eyes only (not to be shared with
the group): “I really shouldn’t be here, but I have to help the Rabbi.”
Character Role-Play Card #10
Rabbi Josh Moss: age 27. Rabbi Moss is new to the temple (6 months) but
very involved in community action. He has, besides his rabbinical degree,
an MSW from Hunter College in New York City. He is newly married and
has one-month-old twins. Concerns: “This is a dangerous situation. It’s absolutely
necessary for us to help out here. I know the Darlings personally
and many of the other residents in the building, too. This is awful!” For my
eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “I don’t know how much help
we can give, but we have to do something. Pray ?”
