266 Geriatric Mental Health Disaster and Emergency Preparedness
Character Role-Play Card #11
Fred Bledd: fireman, age 30. Fred is married with two children. Formerly
a marine sergeant, he was a fireman in Los Angeles for 5 years. He is
strong, thorough, and soft-spoken. Concerns: “My father died 4 months
ago. My mother is handicapped and lives in a place like this. Can we get
these people out of here safely?” For my eyes only (not to be shared with
the group): “Why doesn’t the building have an exit program for emergencies.
These people are helpless.”
Character Role-Play Card #12
John Good: fireman, age 28. John is single and lives at home with his parents
and autistic sister. He has been a fireman for 3 months. Previously,
he was a student at Viceroy Community College. He is quick, quiet, and
ambitious. Concerns: “This is such a mess. I don’t know how we can handle
this even if these people cooperate. Our radio communications are
not working.” For my eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “How
can I convince this lady to leave without the dogs? Don’t they realize that
their lives are in danger?”
Character Role-Play Card #13
Mack Back: neighbor, age 77. Mack is a retired shoe store owner. He lives
with his wife, Sue, and their cat Chagall. They are good friends of the Darlings.
Mack is strong, resourceful, and pleasant but also very hard of hearing
and arthritic. Concerns: “I hope that Charley and Doris can get out of
this okay.” For my eyes only (not to be shared with the group): “How many
times have I told them that they should move to a lower floor?”
Character Role-Play Card #14
Sue Back: neighbor, age 69. Sue is a retired bookkeeper, superb card player,
tennis player, and wife of Mack for 45 years. She dotes on their three
grandchildren. Concerns: “I worry about them. Neither one is in great
health, and I know she won’t leave without the dogs.” For my eyes only
(not to be shared with the group): “I am so glad we’re on the first floor. I
hope Mack doesn’t try to be a hero here. I’ll kill him if he does.”
