taking medications, planning a meal, shopping, <strong>and</strong> working in an<br />

occupation.<br />

Intent-to-Treat Analysis. Analysis of data in terms of the relationship<br />

between the number of patients r<strong>and</strong>omized to treatment <strong>and</strong> the<br />

number whose condition improved.<br />

Interpersonal Psychotherapy. A time-limited psychotherapeutic approach<br />

that aims to clarify <strong>and</strong> resolve one or more of the following<br />

interpersonal diffi culties: role disputes, social isolation, prolonged<br />

grief reaction, or role transition. The patient <strong>and</strong> therapist defi ne the<br />

nature of the diffi culty <strong>and</strong> work to its resolution.<br />

*Man-Made or Human-Generated <strong>Disaster</strong>s; Complex Emergencies. Technological<br />

events that are caused by humans <strong>and</strong> occur in human settlements<br />

[for example, fi re, chemical spills <strong>and</strong> explosions, <strong>and</strong> armed<br />

confl ict].<br />

Maintenance Treatment. Treatment designed to prevent a new mood<br />

episode (e.g. depression, mania, or hypomania).<br />

Major Depressive Disorder. A major mood disorder characterized by<br />

one (single) or more (recurrent) episodes of major depression, with or<br />

without full recovery between episodes.<br />

Major <strong>Disaster</strong>. A major disaster refers to any natural or man-made<br />

catastrophe (including any hurricane, tornado, storm, high water, winddriven<br />

water, tidal wave, tsunami, earthquake, volcanic eruption, l<strong>and</strong>slide,<br />

mudslide, snowstorm, drought, or terrorist activity) that by the<br />

determination of the president causes damage of suffi cient severity<br />

<strong>and</strong> magnitude to warrant major disaster assistance to supplement the<br />

efforts <strong>and</strong> available resources of states, local governments, <strong>and</strong> disaster<br />

relief organizations in alleviating the damage, loss, hardship, or<br />

suffering .<br />

Mania. An episode of illness usually seen in the course of bipolar I<br />

disorder <strong>and</strong> characterized by hyperexcitability, euphoria, <strong>and</strong> hyperactivity.<br />

Rapid thinking <strong>and</strong> speaking, agitation, a decreased need<br />

for sleep, <strong>and</strong> a marked increase in energy are nearly always present.<br />

During manic episodes, some patients also experience hallucinations<br />

or delusions. Manic episodes can also be caused by selected general<br />

medical disorders.
