SIXTEEN CYLINDER<br />

ENGINE<br />

The <strong>1938</strong> <strong>Cadillac</strong> sixteen cylinder engine is the result<br />

of several years' development by <strong>Cadillac</strong> engineers for<br />

the purpose of making sixteen cylinder smoothness and<br />

performance available to a great many more motorists.<br />

To accomplish this purpose, a power plant has been<br />

designed in which sixteen cylinders totaling 431 cubic<br />

inches displacement require no greater hood length<br />

than was required for the former V-12 engine. Also,<br />

the new Sixteen engine, although much larger, is actually<br />

lighter than the former V-12. Unusual compactness,<br />

economical service and extreme durability have<br />

been realized by the combination of a very short<br />

stroke, a V-angle of 135 degrees and an enbloc casting<br />

of cylinder banks and crankcase. Other unique features<br />

of design are the disposition of dual engine accessories;<br />

two dual downdraft carburetors, two manifold systems,<br />

two distributors, two coils, two fuel pumps, two water<br />

pumps, two fan belts. Each bank of eight cylinders is<br />

in running balance, hence the new Sixteen engine will<br />

operate more smoothly on one bank of cylinders than<br />

most eight cylinder automobiles.<br />

The bore is 3¼ inches, the stroke 3¾ inches.<br />
