Bronze thrust hearings are used between the two<br />

differential pinions and the housing* The ring gear<br />

diameter is eleven inches.<br />

All gears are carefully ground, finished by <strong>Cadillac</strong>'s<br />

famous lapping process, and matched individually by<br />

hand into sets. Each axle housing is manufactured for<br />

its own particular set of gears.<br />

New, Unusually Strong Hypoid Rear Axle<br />

The phenomenal performance of the Sixteen is partially<br />

due to a carefully selected 4.31 to 1 rear axle<br />

ratio. This is a large reduction from the previous V-16,<br />

made possible by decreased weight, and also accounts<br />

for the exceptionally low piston travel of the new<br />

sixteen cylinder engine.<br />
