PREFACE
Riding on the success of the previous 4 conferences respectively held in 1994 (Hangzhou), 1997
(Hong Kong), 2003 (Taipei) and 2007 (Hangzhou), we are delighted to convene the 5th Cross-strait
Conference on Structural and Geotechnical Engineering from 13 to 15 July, 2011 at The Hong Kong
Polytechnic University.
This conference is organized by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University and co-organized by
Zhejiang University and National Taiwan University. This event is not only to provide a forum for
structural and geotechnical engineering professionals and academia from the Chinese mainland,
Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as well Chinese scholars from other countries to meet together and
share new ideas, achievements and experiences through presentations and discussions, but also to
review trends in research development and engineering applications.
The proceedings of the conference comprise 8 keynote papers (or lectures) and 20 invited papers (or
lectures) as well as 92 regular papers. These papers have covered a wide range of issues concerning
structural and geotechnical engineering. Showcasing diversity and quality, these papers report the
current state-of-the-art and point to future directions of research and applications in this exciting area.
The success of the conference is due to the dedication and support of many individuals and
organizations. On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to thank all authors for careful
preparation of their papers, and all speakers of keynote papers, invited papers, and regular papers for
sharing their work, experience and insight at the conferencing. All papers submitted to the conference
were reviewed by members of the Scientific Committee and the Organizing Committee. We are
grateful to all of them for their important contributions to the conference. In addition to sharing the
paper review work, members of the Organizing Committee have also been most generous with their
time in the organization work. As chairs of the Organizing Committee, we are indebted to all of them.
The financial support from Kwang-Hua Fund for College of Civil Engineering, Tongji University is
acknowledged with heartfelt gratitude.
On behalf of the Organizing Committee, we would like to express many thanks to colleagues from
Faculty of Construction and Land Use for their secretarial support, in particular, Miss Liz Lau, Miss
Cindy Li, Ms Connie Man, and Mr Jason Au, who have been involved in the production of the
proceedings and preparation of the conference.
One of the founders of this series of conferences, Professor Wen-Lu Jin ( 金 问 鲁 教 授 ) has passed
away. We have written one Chinese article, following this preface, to memorialize Professor Jin for
his contributions to this series of conferences and to his achievements in research and practices in
structural and geotechnical engineering.
