<strong>process</strong> <strong>improvement</strong> plans are developed to spell out the activities to be performed<br />

<strong>and</strong> their associated resources, responsibilities, <strong>and</strong> authorities.<br />

This PA also addresses the collection <strong>and</strong> deployment of actual results of<br />

<strong>process</strong> implementation, such as measurements <strong>and</strong> work products. Use<br />

of these ‘‘lessons learned’’ allows effective organizational learning to take<br />

place.<br />

Through implementation of GP 2.4, this PA addresses the need to assign<br />

responsibility for <strong>process</strong> <strong>improvement</strong>. That responsibility is typically vested<br />

in the management steering committee <strong>and</strong> engineering <strong>process</strong> group.<br />

The purpose of organizational <strong>process</strong> definition is to establish <strong>and</strong> maintain a<br />

usable set of organizational <strong>process</strong> assets.<br />

Why is this important<br />

Use of a st<strong>and</strong>ard set of <strong>process</strong>es allows for consistent <strong>and</strong> predictable performance.<br />

The OPD PA is concerned with development <strong>and</strong> deployment of those<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>process</strong>es. Whereas some organizations may generally develop the<br />

same type of product repeatedly, others engage in a variety of businesses <strong>and</strong><br />

products <strong>and</strong> may need more flexibility in adapting the st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>process</strong>es to<br />

fit specific needs. Although this flexibility is needed, too much freedom may<br />

mean that the benefits of st<strong>and</strong>ardization are lost. Therefore, as part of the<br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard <strong>process</strong> definitions, guidance is provided on selection of life-cycle<br />

models <strong>and</strong> the tailoring of <strong>process</strong>es <strong>and</strong> <strong>process</strong> elements.<br />

This PA also addresses establishing <strong>and</strong> maintaining a library of <strong>process</strong><br />

assets <strong>and</strong> a measurement repository. This PA enables GP 3.1 <strong>and</strong> GP 3.2<br />

across all other PAs.
