As before, the staged representation is used to explain the steps although it<br />

begins to look more like the continuous representation because we are only<br />

<strong>using</strong> selected PAs.<br />

7.4.2.3 Case 3: transitioning to <strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:<strong>2000</strong> <strong>and</strong> the <strong>CMMI</strong> ® with <strong>ISO</strong><br />

<strong>9001</strong>:1994 experience but without CMM ® experience<br />

More than 400,000 organizations are <strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:1994 registered <strong>and</strong> most of<br />

them will have to transition to <strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:<strong>2000</strong> (Figure 7.5). Significant portions<br />

of those organizations develop software <strong>and</strong> will need guidance in<br />

applying the <strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:<strong>2000</strong> requirements to software. <strong>ISO</strong> 9000-3:1997<br />

provided guidelines for applying <strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:1994 to software. <strong>ISO</strong> initially<br />

considered the revised st<strong>and</strong>ard sufficiently generic to be used in most applications,<br />

<strong>and</strong> revision of <strong>ISO</strong> 9000-3 was transferred to a different committee.<br />

As of this writing, <strong>ISO</strong> 9000-3:<strong>2000</strong> has not yet been released as an <strong>ISO</strong><br />

st<strong>and</strong>ard. 4<br />

<strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:1994 registered organizations (Figure 7.5) should review the<br />

transition steps described in Section 6.4 to familiarize themselves with the<br />

new <strong>ISO</strong> requirements. Because they develop systems with large software<br />

content, they may consider <strong>using</strong> the <strong>CMMI</strong> ® to interpret those requirements<br />

in terms of systems <strong>and</strong> software engineering <strong>and</strong> to establish the <strong>process</strong><br />

<strong>improvement</strong> activities required by <strong>ISO</strong> 9004:<strong>2000</strong>. For those organizations,<br />

the most appropriate approach is to follow steps in case 1 described earlier.<br />

If the organization’s quality manual was developed by following the 20<br />

<strong>ISO</strong> <strong>9001</strong>:1994 clauses, their first priority will be to determine how much<br />

of the manual can be preserved <strong>and</strong> how much will have to be revised.<br />
